Hell, Boy!
I watched Hellboy again last night. I'd almost forgotten how well the character translated to the big screen.
You know what else it did right?
The villains.
Most (super-hero) movies that feature more than one villain tend to lose focus and either give one of the evil-doers more screen time than the others (Batman Returns) or have too many villains to begin with (Elektra).
Plus, the cgi was awesome. The only time it faltered was when Hellboy was running on the collapsing bridge and pulled a "walking on air" trick similar to the effects in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
I really liked all the characters as they were each given their own distinct personalities which helped make them feel more alive.
I'm surprised I haven't heard much in the way of a sequel. Could've sworn I heard something a while back. It definitely deserves one.
Honestly, I think the B.P.R.D. would make one hell of a television series...

Y'know what this reminds me of..?
That's the cover to one of the various issues of Teen Titans Go!, the comic based on the hit cartoon that's based on the acclaimed Wolfman/Perez-era New Teen Titans series.
I've actually caught a few episodes on Cartoon Network of the show and I must say that it's highly enjoyable.
At first I was a bit uncomfortable with the art and the abundant anime influence. But after a while it grew on me. I think the episode that really clinched it was the one where they fight this guy named Control Freak and Changeling, err... Beast Boy, assumed the guise of Wylie Coyote. That alone made the episode cool. That and the Zinthos commercial.
I was expecting more of the "animated" style that was made popular through Batman Adventures and the first Justice League series. However, I see that they're starting to branch out with a more angular style with Titans and the new Batman show. It looks really good, I think. Makes the characters seem more edgy without making them mature.

BTW, what the pic above reminded me of was this...
That's the DC Elseworld's book that Adam (Dirty Pair) Warren did a while back that featured his take on the Teen Titans. A wonderful read, I must say.
Too bad Marvel Mangaverse, or whatever it was called, didn't work out. Adam deserves something regular and more mainstream.
Meanwhile, here's a link to a site that has episode reviews, screen captures, wallpapers and sound bites (including the "Zinthos" commercial).

Serenity Woes
Looks like Serenity is a limited release... We're not getting it here locally...
I'm going to have to go out of town to watch it. Which means I'm not going to get to see it on preview night.
Of course, other movies I had to go out of town to see include Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and both Kill Bills. I was surprised that we had gotten Sin City here.
Anyway, if you can make your way to the bigger cities that may have Serenity playing, please do. It's gonna be a blast!

Gimme Gimme Gimme
Seeing that my birthday's coming up in a couple months, followed by Christmas the month after, I thought I'd share with everyone what's on my wish list this year...
First, I would still love to have the complete set of Reel Wild Cinema. I still haven't gotten these...
Second, all four collections of Posefile, which looks like a great source for action poses.
Third, these Microman figures. They appear to be a great source, as well, with thirty points of articulation! Just like wooden mannequins but much smaller!
Fourth, a year's subscription to Comics Revue would be just wonderful... I like reading the classic strips. You can learn a lot from the masters.
And last, but not least, Lost- Season 1.
Of course, I'll probably end up buying all these myself. It'll just take time...

I'm still reading the great Seven Soldiers series by Grant Morrison.
Recently, Lindsay Duff and the Legions Of The V (don't ask, I have no idea...) provided Rich Johnston a collection of annotations for Seven Soldiers (thus far...).

Working on a DVD Collection...
Just added two more DVDs to my collection today. Got both Hellboy and Once Upon a Time in Mexico for just $5 each at my job.
I need to go through and organize my DVDs. At least what I have left from my last pawning frenzy...
I was amazed at all the bonus features on Hellboy. I'm sure I'll be checking it all out for quite some time.

The Wind is Blowin'
Looks like we're going to be open tomorrow. Even though the banks and half the businesses in town are closing for the day.
Honestly, I'm not sure how bad it'll get here with us being so far away from the eye of the hurricane... But with it being so hot and dry here lately, I wouldn't be surprised if it flooded and we had a tornado or two.
Still a few hours until we get any effects from the weather here but the wind's started to pick up.
Someone came by the store today and said that if we lose power in town it may be two weeks before it gets back up. I highly doubt it. Although a couple days would be alright. I'd get some time off and I do have candles...

A Sign That I Work Too Much?
So, this morning I left for work. And as usual, I stopped at the same convenience store that I stop at every day to get me a nice large fountain drink to get me through the day.
I was a bit bewildered at the lady in front of me at the register who was buying two gallons of water. And when it was my turn, the cashier greets me with, "No water or gas?"
I was like, "Ummm... no..." and I paid for my drink and went to work.
Minutes later at work, the UPS delivery guy tells me that he needs to fill up his car before the gas goes up. That's when I discover that the hurricane had changed course and was heading closer to us.
I was like, "Oh... That explains it..."
So I spent the day waiting patiently for my lunch break so I could fill up my truck. Meanwhile, I'm hearing stories about how all the stores are selling out of C and D batteries, bottled water and how the gas stations are running out of gas.
And stories of how the refineries, once they're hit, will send gas prices over $4 a gallon.
Lunch break rolls around and I spend thirty minutes filling up my truck, which costs me a whopping $65.00 (There's goes my entertainment for the next month).
It looks like the storm won't really effect us until Friday night or Saturday. I'm really looking forward to it, since I'm closing the store both nights. Think I'll throw a toga party.

Music- various things at the moment... classic country one day, ebm the next, and then some White Stripes, Killers and Jet whenever the mood strikes... Though right now I'm in the mood for Vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack and some George Winston...

Spaghetti Westerns on IFC
Spaghetti West will be a three weekend focus on the much beloved genre, Spaghetti Western.
It's only four movies but a new, original documentary about the genre will be premiered during the event.

So... I Took a Vacation...
Just not from work.
Got a promotion at work. I'm now the Assistant Manager. Which means I do all the stuff I've been doing already and take more responsibility for it. Oh and I get paid more, too... Be glad when it kicks in...
And work's been particularly nasty this week as we've had to reorganize the store, put up new marketing and get ready for (tomorrow's) inventory. Meanwhile, the store manager's having personal problems, I'm being sick all week and the guy who's now in my old place is still in need of training.
I've been playing pool a lot lately. Even went so far as to buy my own (cheap ass) stick. Went to play nine-ball at a local bar and came in second place on my first night. Too bad second place didn't win anything.
Saw Transporter 2 the other night. Well, almost. I missed a great part of it because I had to take calls from work, but what I saw was okay. Not as good as the first one, in my opinion.
I haven't been to the comic shop in a while. Mostly due to a combination of gas prices and work scheduling.
I have read the first two issues of the new Defenders mini-series, though, and found it enjoyable. Not as exciting as I was expecting but Giffen, DeMatteis and Maguire still have great talent.
I need to get back to writing and drawing, myself. I haven't done it in so long. It's very easy to get into the daily grind and become a zombie. I must fight it.
I bought two Troma DVDs that came into work this last month: Toxic Avenger: the Director's Cut and Hellblock 13. I haven't watched either one, yet, but I did watch the preview clips that are on them. Fun stuff, indeed. I went to their website and saw info on their upcoming film, Poultygeist: Attack of the Chicken Zombies. If you like cool bad movies, check it out. Www.tromaville.com.
Apologies to everyone at the various message boards I frequently go to. It's been relatively hot here and I have no a/c so I have been spending most of my time out of my house. Of course, having no a/c never really was much of a problem for me up until I started working forty hours a week at a store that's kept at 60 degrees.
Hard Case Crime will be on CBS' "Sunday Morning" show September 18th. Stephen King and Robert McGinnis will also be featured. Mark your calendar.
Oddly enough, my remix of Dream Girl got a new review. Considering the song's been up since 2002 and the last review was from that same year, I was a bit shocked to find someone actually listening to the thing. Reminds me that I need to get back into that, too...
Who knows..? Maybe I can keep from becoming a retail zombie after all.
