Nextwave #1

So let's see...

We have Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen on an all-new ongoing team book. Which doesn't have an X in the name (okay... it does, but not THE 'X') or even a cameo of Wolverine.
So you know I just had to check it out.

Especially when it gets as hyped as it did. I mean if this book flopped it was gonna FLOP!

Fortunately, it doesn't do that. The book is a solid read. Although, Immonen's simplified art style took a few pages to adjust to. But I will say it looks better on paper than on the computer.

The characters are interesting enough. It was good to see all these third stringers find a home.

I enjoyed the little bits of camp exposition that Warren put every few pages in small captions, such as-
"NEXTWAVE is a super hero comic about five people who have just minutes to prevent a town from being eaten by a giant lizard monster. In purple underpants."

Elsa Bloodstone comes off acting a lot like Grace (from THE OUTSIDERS), with a bit of a Buffy backstory. And a liking of tea.

The Captain doesn't really get to do much but fly and tell us why he's just named 'The Captain'.

Monica Rambeau (Captain Marvel/Photon) gets a bit more respect in this book than I've seen in recent years. However, the puppy scene was kinda disturbing coming from this character.

Aaron Stack (Machine Man) appears to be one of the more interesting characters as Warren plays up his Data-esque feelings toward "fleshy ones" (humans).

Tabitha Smith (Book Boom/Meltdown) might get a bit of redemption here as she's decided to go without a code-name, therefore avoiding the problem of having to come up with one that's not so bad.

And Dirk Anger (Ellis' Nick Fury joke) has a moment of attention. I wonder if he's going to end up on the regular team.

Fin Fang Foom fits right in with the story and it's played with a bit of tongue-in-cheek satire.

I didn't care much for the "Broccoli Men" or the phone that Dirk uses in the middle of the comic, however I see what Ellis is shooting for. It seems that he may be trying a bit too hard to be over the top. But it is Warren fuckin' Ellis. So why not?

Overall, it was a fun read.
It's camp. But serious. Satirical. But sincere.

It was just crazy.

I'm sure I'll be picking up #2. It'll be interesting to see if he can keep this momentum going.

It's like Shakespeare,
but with lots more punching.
It's like Goethe,
but with lots more crunching.
Like Titanic, but the boat's still floating.
No, it's not, the mother####ing boat is exploading!

Nextwave, Nextwave

Dirk Anger is one bad mamajama.
He leads H.A.T.E., sitting around in his pretty pink pajamas.
H.A.T.E. was formed by the Beyond Corporation.
Purposely to bring about catastrophic devastation.

Nextwave, Nextwave

Do you need a haircut?
The Beyond Corporations gonna help you out.
Do you need a toothbrush?
The Beyond Corporations got an extra one.
Do you have a stepson?
The Beyond Corporations gonna wipe him out.
Do you see a monster, or a pirate, electric emu, a giant sky rat, a midget Hitler or Pontius Pilate?
Don't call your mom or a doctor, just pick up the phone and call.

Nextwave, Nextwave

Monica- is gonna microwave your ####.
Tabby- is gonna steal all your stuff.
Aaron- is going to organize your sock drawer.
Elsa- is gonna speak with an accent.
The Captain- his name is The Captain!

Decisions, Decisions

So, I've decided that I'm gonna pick up a trade paperback each month. Mostly because there's so many I need to get that if I don't at least get one a month, I'll never get them all.

So far I have:

100 Bullets and Daredevil I've been getting in monthlies, but I'm considering switching to trades for both of them.

As for my tough decision, I had a hard time trying to choose from SWAMP THING VOL. 4, DOOM PATROL VOL. 1 or PROMETHEA VOL. 2.
I decided to go with the Doom Patrol since I already have the comics that are in the Swamp Thing trade. If ANIMAL-MAN VOL. 1 had been there, I woulda probably gone with that one, instead. Not sure.

As for Sandman, I'm more of an Alan Moore and Grant Morrison fan so Sandman's gonna be a while.

BTW, if anyone here's a Watchmen fan, I highly reccomend the Mayfair Games sourcebook. Makes a great companion to the graphic novel.

What I Got at the Comic Shop

Made my irregular trip to the comic shop yesterday and picked up the following:

Trying to catch up on the Seven Soldiers books since I've been too busy to go to the comic shop.
Unfortunately, I also missed Desolation Jones #3.

And since this was my first trip of the year and I was picking up all of January's comics, it looks like I've trimmed my monthly comic list pretty good.
I've dropped Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps and Hawkman. Daredevil is iffy. 100 Bullets is on the backburner.

So as of this moment, my monthly list is this:

I'm still missing Mister Miracle #1 and the first two issues of Bulleteer and Frankenstein.

I also picked up Thievery Corporation's Outernational Sound at the record store. I'll be adding it to the playlist next week.

7th Dimension Thursday

Moon Knight Returns

Moon Knight gets a new series in April.
Looks like he's been working out.

Honestly, it appears to me to be the best Moon Knight art since the '86 mini-series. Unless you count the short-lived Marvel Knights series that featured art by Eduardo Barreto.

Go here for more info.

7th Dimension Tuesday

I Am Legend (Episode 2 of 10) Click here to listen.

Six Pack #2

Well, here's the second Six Pack.

2. Thunderball - "Sid's Mellow Trip" (Ambassadors of Style)
3. Thunderball - "Selector" (Ambassadors of Style)
4. Sarah Vaughan - "Whatever Lola Wants (Golden Project Remix)" (Verve Remixed 2)

6. Thievery Corporation - "Assault on Babylon" (Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi)

Marvel Likes Seven Soldiers!

So Marvel's grabbed Ryan Sook (Zatanna) for X-Factor (which he's now off of, btw), Pascal Ferry (the original artist for Mister Miracle)(who seems to only be doing covers) and now they've gotten Yanick Panquette (Bulleteer) to sign an exclusive contract.

Good to see that DC kept Simone Bianchi (Shining Knight), even if it's just for covers.

It's Like A Podcast... But Not Quite..

I just finished mixing Six Pack #2. I'll be posting it later today as I'm about to head for bed now.

I've decided that Tuesdays will be the day I'll be putting these up since I'm generally off on that day each week.

I haven't had any feedback on the first mix so I'm not sure if anyone liked it or not but I'm hoping someone somewhere has found it enjoyable.

While I won't be taking requests, I will be open to suggestions if anybody knows of a band or song that would fit the style of music that I'm spotlighting. And if you're an independent artist making music similar to the kind that's in my playlist feel free to send me a link to a song if you'd like me to add it. Just be sure to put "six pack" or "replicants" somewhere in the subject line so it won't get deleted.

That's all for now. Expect Six Pack #2 around 1PM EST.

Some Handy PSP Info

The folks over at PSP Updates has revealed how to reach (and keep) a level 4 brightness on your PSP. I thought there was only three levels, myself.

Here's what they say:

Brightness Level 4 is bright… but we need the power adapter plugged to keep it. The problem is obvious - we can’t drag the damn power cord everywhere.

The problem is over now. We are glad to share a very handy method for keeping your PSP locked on Level 4 Brightness, without any messy process.

1, Plug your power cord.
2, Adjust your brightness to Level 4.
3, Start a UMD game/homebrew.
4, When the program launch video is being played (the one with green balls flashed and PSP text in the middle of the screen), make sure you unplug the power cord from the PSP when the launch sound effect is over. You will notice that the brightness didn’t fall down to level 3.

And now, your screen brightness is locked at Level 4! You can suspend and resume the PSP, turn it off and back on, or even turn the screen off by pressing and holding the brightness button until the screen is turned off, and none of the actions above will make your PSP lose Level 4 brightness!!! The power saving screen shutting off function will not change the brightness too.

The only way to go back to brightness level 3, is to adjust it manually by pressing the brightness button.

We should say, this is a very handy way to keep the brightness on-the-go. Level 3 is not enough for some videos sometimes. The only thing you need to make sure is not to touch the brightness button until necessary.

Neato mosquito!

Coming Up on 7th Dimension

Jefferson 37
Saturdays. A new four-part science-fiction serial specially commissioned for BBC 7. It's a gripping thriller, set in the near future, and explores the idea of clones being created specifically to provide body parts to those who can afford it. Written by Jenny Stephens and directed by Peter Leslie Wild, it stars David Birrell, Alison Carney, Oliver Hembrough and Dharmesh Patel. A must for 7th Dimension fans who I know really enjoy new sci-fi on the Network.

I am Legend
Weekdays. Richard Matheson's 1954 novel, is another new BBC 7 commission. Taking place in New York, it's a tale of vampires and a man immune to the plague that has decimated most of the population. I'm starting to work on a couple new comics and I won't be posting here as much as I usually do.

I plan on making one comic as a mini, much like the first two issues of 'Nuther World Comics.
The other will be my attempt at a PSP formatted comic.
We'll see how it turns out.

Meanwhile, the Eye Candy and 7th Dimension posts will continue, as will my Mad Mad Movie Marathon schedule.

And I may jump in here every now and then if something makes me go hmmmmmmm.
