Character Relations in Mothership
Something I really liked in the video games by Screwfly Studios, where you manage a small group of characters, was how these characters' feelings towards each other impacted the game, and how those relations would change over the course of the game.
Fans of Mothership and Alien really should check out Deadnaut. (Warning, it's tough. And stressful.)
What I'm going to borrow from their games for Mothership is the character relations.
For each character, you'll roll a d100 for each other character. This is how they view that other character.
1d100 roll
01-05 ------ love (purple)
06-27 ------ like (blue)
28-50 ----- trust (green)
51-73 ------ distrust (yellow)
74-95 ----- dislike (orange)
96-00 ----- hate (red)
An example:
Let's say I have four characters. We'll call them A, B, C and D.
Rolling, I get the following:
A dislikes B, likes C, and trusts D
B trusts A, distrusts C, and likes D
C loves A, loves B, and trusts D
D likes A, loves B, and trusts D
This can also be graphed out like this, which gives a good view of the interrelation dynamics going on.
Or-
[A] dislikes --> <-- trusts [B]
[A] likes ------><-- loves [C]
[A] trusts ----><-- likes [D]
[B] distrusts -><-- loves [C]
[B] likes ------><-- loves [D]
[C] trusts ----><-- trusts [D]
From this we can gather that-
A & C and B & D could possibly be in relationships.
C loves B, but B distrusts C...
B trusts A, but A dislikes B...
A & D get along, and C & D trust each other.
In gaming, this would mean that C would give their last bandage or med kit to B, but B would be hesitant to do the same for them.
Meanwhile, B would defend A in battle, but A would likely leave B to fend for themselves...
This could lead to some interesting complications during the course of an adventure.
